At $4.99, plus tax, the Mug Hot Dog w chips is a pretty neat meal-a-deal. The bun is soft and tasty while the all beef dog is the real deal. For those with an interest, the image below is of a Chicago Dog!

Local restaurant news!
Forsyth Mo. - A few news tidbits concerning restaurants in town.
Long Horn - Apparently the Long Horn will re-open soon as they had a sign to that effect posted on their billboard which read The Forsyth Family Restaurant.
Update: Jan 30 - I did get a chance to talk to a man named Jimmy, an Italian who will be re-opening the restaurant 'soon'. He told me very little other than that they had finished hiring.
McD's - The McDonald's located at the intersection of Hwy 160 and Coy was still cranking along when I stopped there recently and ordered a Big Breakfast to go. The cost of $4.43 was acceptable for this 750 calorie meal a deal. At least to me it was.
Frosted Mug - Other than the Super Bowl Blowout planned for Feb 2, the Mug will also be offering a special Valentines Day meal for two at just $24.95 on Feb 14. I was unsure if the Stella beers were part of this deal and failed to ask.Update: I was told that the $3.75 beers were not part of the deal. Perhaps love means also buying your girl a Stella!
Charlie's Steak, Ribs and Ale - One recent rumor had it that this establishment that had been up for sale for a number of years was sold! I had not confirmed this as of Feb 9, 2020.

Chiefs clinch a Superbowl spot while I watched at the Frosted Mug!
Forsyth MO. - Another Sunday football playoff game was to be watched in very comfortable conditions, even as it was chilly outside!
Surprisingly, considering that only one of three heating units was in operation at John's Frosted Mug located on Hwy 160 in Forsyth MO., it still was a very comfortable 75 degrees. I attributed this to the heat given off by a packed house that enjoyed watching the Chief's shellac the Titans in a decisive 35 to 24 game at Arrowhead. A game that saw the KC Chiefs headed to the Superbowl for only the third time (once in 1967 and again in 1970 in a year they won! That year the American Football League champion Kansas City Chiefs defeated the National Football League champion Minnesota Vikings by the score of 23–7)!
This time around the Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49'ers at the Hard Rock stadium in Miami Florida. I betting that weather will not pose a problem for either team on Sunday, January 26 at 5:30 PM EST on Fox! Grab a choice seat now for only $20 payable to me.... just kidding.

A Pittsburg salad with fries? And at the Frosted Mug? Uh no...
Forsyth Mo - Here’s the real deal, salad lovers. Sometimes we all want to eat a salad that’s simply full of lettuce and vegetables. Other times we want to eat a salad that’s full of lettuce, vegetables, shredded cheese, croutons, Ranch dressing, more cheese and more croutons.
I had the occasion to observe this creation served, recently, at a local venue and had to admit that the patron who ordered it (special) seemed to enjoy the experience totally!
So, is this so-called salad now on the menu at the Mug? No. It would seem that only the intelligentsia has access that mere mortals, such as myself, can only dream...
But we had no idea we wanted to eat a salad that’s full of lettuce, vegetables, cheese and FRENCH FRIES.
That’s right. There’s an actual real life salad that’s topped with our favorite French cuisine — fries. WTF??I had the occasion to observe this creation served, recently, at a local venue and had to admit that the patron who ordered it (special) seemed to enjoy the experience totally!

Forsyth MO restaurants and other eateries in July 2019!
Forsyth MO. - If the town of Forsyth Missouri can boast about anything, it can concerning the number of eateries available to its some 2300 residents. Everything from fast food to family dining to Asian and Mexican specialty houses abound! In this post, I wanted to take a quick peek at all of them;
McD's - As you enter town from the north on Hwy 160, one of the first venues you'll likely run into would be McDonald's, a fast food enterprise situated on the corner of 160 and Coy Blvd. And, while I haven't stepped inside the place for some number of months, it looks to always be doing a brisk business. [One rumor I had heard was that this location was to soon sport auto cashier stations. I've also noticed that the prices are on the high side.]
Sonics - Just a little further south on Hwy 160, also on the left side and just past the Country Mart grocery store is a Sonics. I still do the drive thru from time to time and generally order a premium hotdog and fries. This is one of very few locations where you can get yourself a good dawg at a reasonable price.
Mountain William Pizza - This relatively new venue that used to be the Mexican Burrito place has an interesting menu in that they offer both pizza and pasta dishes. I really wanted to stop in an order a gold old dish of spaghetti and meatballs, but a current diet I was on prevented me from going there. I hoped to remedy that sometime in early August when I was a bit slimmer.
Yummy Donuts - Located just down the line of this eatery killers row is a place that I had not yet attended. As a man on a low carb diet, I just haven't had the nerve to step across the threshold. Others more bold than me tell me that the food there is divine.
Frosted Mug - This venerable old location is one of the few all smoking restaurant/ bars in the area. When I go there to eat, I'll often order either tacos (a special on Wednesday) or the French dip and French fries which are specially priced on Tuesdays. You can eat there or have carry out. Your choice.
Oaxaca - The one and only true Mexican restaurant in town sports a very large menu selection. I ate there, recently, and enjoyed the food. I had a taco, burrito and rice combo which was great although I also felt that the prices were just a tad high.
Long Horn - Another long standing family dining affair serves up a mean hamburger and fries. I go there on a regular basis for both breakfast and lunch.
Fat Daddy's - Pulled pork on a bun with a side of fries is a favorite of mine. FD's is all about BBQ and they live up to the fine tasting rep they have.
Charlies - Currently closed.
Thrive bistro - Situated just across from the Forsyth public library is a nice little venue that serves an assortment of Italian leaning entrees. Recently, when I dined there I had their angel hair spaghetti and sauce offering with garlic bread sticks which was fabulous!
Shadowrock Cafe and Grill - Currently closed.

Frosted Mug on St. Patrick's Day!
Forsyth MO. - Saturday, March the 17th is Saint Patrick's Day for 2018! Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. But, for most Americans today, it is a time of celebration, green beer and lots of food food!
To that end, John's Frosted Mug will be offering up a great 'feast' that will include corned beef, cabbage, new potatoes, carrots and rye bread for only $7.50! And while I'm unsure as to the color of the beer, they do have a one of a kind Irish Elf which I've been told is 'well hung'!

Issues at the Frosted Mug!
Forsyth Mo – John's Frosted Mug
is a bar slash restaurant that has been an icon in my small town for
a number of decades. When I was working, I'd often stop there for a
couple of cold beers and maybe a game of pool after I'd get off. I
started going there back in 1992 or so and feel that I know the venue
fairly well.
That was then, and now is now, however.
The Mug, in my opinion, faces a number of issues that could prove to
be problematic for any long term survival. Let me list five of them
here;
- I cannot remember when either the outside or the inside has last seen a significant effort at renovation. In 2018, it's now showing some clear signs of wear and tear that likely do little to improvement customer expectations.
- The Mug is a smoking only facility, meaning that there are no accommodations for non-smokers there at all! At a time where people have quit or are quitting in record number, this venue has become less and less appealing to larger and larger numbers of potential customers.
- The menu and especially the specials have become predictable and therefore uninspiring. While the quality of the food there is good, recent price increases may be playing to a smaller dinner crowd.
- The lone pool table has issues, (this according to a few avid players I've talked to). Apparently the rails have some dead spots that makes clean play a problem.
- Screaming infants really have no place in a smoke filled adult bar, yet they make regular appearances.
These are all problems that have pretty
straight forward solutions. I decided to post this, not to condemn
the establishment, but in the hopes that some needed changes can be
made so that it will once again become a thriving and popular place
to grab a cold one on a hot summer day.

Pizza at the Frosted Mug in Forsyth Missouri!
Recently, I brought my stomach and ravenous appetite to the
Frosted Mug located at 15861 US
Hwy 160 in Forsyth,
Missouri! After going through a
change in management, I was curious to see if their signature offering of pizza
had gotten better or worst or just stayed about the same.
I arrived in the late afternoon on a Saturday in early
February when the weather outside was serving up cool temperatures under cloudy skies. The perfect kind of
weather in which to enjoy a hot, cheesy pizza! (Actually, any old day is a good
day for pizza – a fact my expanding waistline will readily attest to).
According to the menu, I noticed they offer a pretty wide
variety of types and sizes, designed to fit needs ranging from single diners to
large gatherings. On this visit, my eyes were quickly attracted to both the
vegetable and meat versions. I inquired if I could have a little of both and
was told it would not be a problem.
While I was waiting for my pizza to be prepared from scratch,
I contented myself to ordering a cold frosted mug for which this establishment
is named. Hmm. Let me see now, cold beer and pizza! Can it get much better that?
While sipping my beer, I had a chance to look around to see what was what. I’ve
been coming to the Mug for many years now and have always been impressed with
the warm homey feeling that the place exudes.
On this day, that same feeling was still there and maybe this
sounds silly, but the staff seemed very friendly and upbeat! Some of them were
new, like Karen, who graciously served me during my visit. In the picture below, Heather is showing off the pizza I ordered which I understand is a new
creation to be found only at the Mug!
If you get a chance, please stop in and check out this wonderful and friendly icon. The Frosted Mug can be reached at 417) 546-4149 during
regular business hours.
