Lunch at Oaxaca Mexican restaurant!
15920 US Hwy 160, Forsyth MO (417) 546-2233 |
Old location off Coy Blvd. |
----------------------------------------------------
March 28, 2019 – On what was
just the second day of being open, I took a good friend there for lunch on what was a beautiful early spring day. I
had previously written a short review where I also posted
copies of the menu they were using at the time and was not sure if they were going to using the same one. Well, yes they were, and while I couldn't tell if the item prices had actually changed, they looked to be close to me and the menu was the same.
As we arrived just after 11AM, the place was not very crowded, (but did get so by 11:30). Eating lunch a tad early proved to be a great idea as parking is somewhat limited, (a fact that would likely resolve itself after the grand opening excitement had worn off). After ordering drinks, I decided on the dinner selection number 8 which was two tacos with beans and rice. My friend ordered a #1 which was a taco and 2 enchiladas. The service was fast and the food great!

The state of a few businesses in Forsyth MO!
Forsyth MO. - On what was the day of the State of the Union address that was to be given by President Trump, I thought it would be interesting to do a drive around and try and get a feel for my small town of Forsyth MO.
The day was overcast, it was early February and rain was forecast to fall late in the day. At the 2PM hour, I was surprised to see quite a bit of traffic going in both directions. That said, there were also a goodly amount of businesses that were no longer in operation. Following are a few;
Charlies - This upscale establishment had been closed for some time and seemed likely to remain so. There had been a rumor that the recently closed Mexican restaurant (see below) people were going to lease out this venue, but as of the date of this blog I observed zero activity...
OAXACA - What was becoming a popular Mexican cuisine restaurant had closed and when I tried calling the establishment, the phone just a kept on a ringing. Which brings me to...
The Mexican-Burrito restaurant - OK, it too had closed which made me wonder if the citizens of Forsyth had something against Mexican food? I mean that Asian Buffet place was still open so what gives?
At least this place had a sign that gave out some useful information to anyone who might want to open up something new...
Park Place Market - Another venerable convenience style store that had bit the dust! Well, Forsyth did have a couple of the mega gas island /slash/ convenience-styled stores still hanging around, so who would miss another tiny bit of Americana going bye bye.... (Me for one)!
Still there is some good news to print when I state that that bridge that crosses Bull Shoals has been completed along with a new roundabout! Both are working very well and could provide great access to both Shadowrock and River Run Parks, that is assuming they don't flood out due to heavy spring rains...

Wandering around Forsyth MO in January 2019!
For such a small Midwestern town, Forsyth enjoys over ten eateries, which might explain why some of the locals (me included) are just a tad overweight...
Bull Shoals bridge and roundabout!
Peggy's Park Place closed!
I was with some consternation that I learned that the Park Place convenience store had closed. A friend had texted this news to me and so I drove down to the store, located near the Bull Shoals bridge, to see what was going on. The sign on the door plainly indicated that the venue had 'gone out of business'. Sad.
Shadowrock Lodge not yet open!
Mexican- Burrito restaurant closes!
What had been a laundromat many years ago, and which had been the site of numerous restaurant startups, the latest edition aka the Mexican-Burrito restaurant had apparently also taken a siesta and was now closed. I was unable to get any information as to whether or not the establishment will re-open or will remain closed.
That leaves just Oaxaca as one of the only venues left to get authentic Mexican cuisine and I've heard a rumor that it too may be relocating soon...
Charlie's restaurant still up for sale!
Now going into its second year of being for sale or lease, the former Charlies Steak Ribs and Ale restaurant remains available. When it was open, Charlies was arguably one of the most upscale restaurants in the area. (That honor perhaps now going to either Fat Daddy's or the Long Horn Family Dining establishments). In any case, I was hoping to see this fine establishment under new ownership very soon!
Shadowrock and River Run Parks!
On a better note, both Shadowrock and River Run were looking great. I noticed that the entrance to River Run, off Highway 76 had really been cleaned up (pic at left), making the Park area easy to see from the road. Both parks were open, which was somewhat surprising, as during the last government shutdown under Obama, River Run was closed! That said, it was looking as though all we really had to worry about come the spring of 2019 would be heavy rains... I'll try and keep tabs on this at my weather site.
Update: March 8, 2019 - River Run was closed. Why? I had no clue. Please see this post!

Ozark Firearms! A good place to shop!
Branson MO - Ozark Firearms is owned and operated by Mr. Grant Holcomb. I recently visited his home/store to make a purchase and would like to recommend his place to anyone looking for a firearm or ammunition. Please give him a call!
The store has a good selection of all types of handguns including Glock and Ruger, in addition to many types of rifles!

Sonic mini review! The All American Dog!
My only hesitation centered around the 'order box' where you can place an order in the drive thru lane. At times I've found it difficult to understand what was being said. On a few occasions, I just went ahead and repeated my order then drove forward, hoping for the best. Yes, it was that difficult to understand the little squeaky little voice coming out of that box! And yet, it was well worth the effort, as I could score an all American Hot dog and medium fries for only $4.31 including tax!
On this occasion, however, I breezed through the line, could clearly hear (see the short video) and was on my way in just a few short minutes!

Kar Lot Oil & Lube!
Forsyth MO. - Oil changes are fact of life, and after I discovered that the Mobile One facility had closed yet again, I went on search of a new facility. I quickly discovered the Kar Lot Oil & Lube located close to the Long Horn Family Dining restaurant at 16099 US-160. The garage is run by a gentleman named David who told me has had decades of experience and who I personally found to be very professional....
When and if you need service that includes oil changes, but which also which encompasses just about everything other than transmissions and exhaust work, a quick call to 417-546-8484 will allow you to set up an appointment. When I arrived at mine, I my auto was serviced in a fast and friendly fashion. David not only changed the oil, but also check my fluid levels, adjusted my tire air pressures and did a good overall inspection. The whole process took only about twenty minutes and while I was waiting, I was impressed with David's attention to detail and the manner in which he kept his garage in almost immaculate condition. A good place to try for your next service needs!

What is this place?
Kissee Mills, MO - While driving down Hwy 76 in Kissee Mills, I had just reach Highway O when I noticed an establishment on the left. Large lettering announced that it was 'The Outpost', but that was all. A small sign indicated they were open, but with nothing else to go by, I decided not to stop.

That leftover bridge could be utilized!!
Forsyth MO. – Sometime in the coming
fall of 2018, the new bridge over Bull Shoals will be completed. When
that happens, it's my understanding that the old bridge will stay, be
sealed off with foot and bicycle traffic still being allowed.
While looking at a picture of that
bridge (above), it occurred to me that there is a decent amount of space along that span! Space
that perhaps could be utilized to some extent in future years.
Specifically, I was thinking about small vendor stalls being erected along one lane that could be made available to anyone who wanted to walk up and purchase whatever it was being sold. Of course, parking spaces would be needed at the end opposite the turnaround. I was thinking something like 20 or so spaces where someone could park their vehicle and then stroll along the bridge. Perhaps even steps could be created just before the turnaround area to give walkers access to and from Shadowrock Park. Now, I'm aware that this would be a tall infrastructure order. The area would need power, water and toilet and waste facilities. Still, if done right, it would be unique...
Such a setup, if done properly, would be sure to garner some national press. Something that would be very good for our area.

Forsyth Events occurring on October 28!
Forsyth Halloween Parade!
Forsyth MO. – It's time for
the annual Halloween Parade which is being hosted, once again, by the
City of Forsyth. Registration is to occur in the parking lot of the
Forsyth Presbyterian Church at 1PM on Saturday, October the 28th with
the actual parade taking place from 2PM to 4PM. Pre-school through
4th grade children are invited to participate. After the
parade, and also in the 2-4PM time frame, will be the annual Trick or
Treat Community Party which will be happening in the aforementioned
parking lot!
Fall Cleanup Day set!
Not to be outdone with the kids parade,
The Taney County Commission has designated October 28, as the day to allow Taney County
residents to dispose of certain items at the two transfer stations –
for free! One of the stations is located at 274 Buchanan Road with
the other on Hwy 160 just three miles to the north of Forsyth near
the Taney Center. From 8AM to 3:30PM, residents can dump; furniture,
appliances and automotive batteries. Also allowed will be most
anything made of metal or lumber. Glass will also be accepted as long
as it is segregated from other items being disposed of. If you have
any questions, you can give the Taney County Road and Bridge
Department a call at 417-546-7268. You will be required to
present some form of proof of residency before you will be allowed to
dump stuff off. Note also that the Buchanan Road Transfer Station
only will allow the dropping off of tires for a $1 fee per tire. The
limit, per resident, is 12 tires at that location! www.taneyweather.com

Charlie's in Forsyth to close for good!
Sunday, October 1, 2017 will be the
last day for Charlie's Steak Ribs and Ale. The establishment will close
for about a week and reportedly reopen on Sunday, October the 8th!
When it does reopen, there will be
changes including a new name – C and C's Pizza and Pub (?) with menu changes in the types of fare offered to the public. Look for some new menu items
including a salad bar, a buffet and pizza!
Personally, I think the changes will be
fun and readily accepted by the local eating crowd.
Update: October 2, 2017 - I just learned that Charlie's, in Forsyth, has closed permanently...Perhaps the owner was in deeper trouble than was suspected (my opinion)... As of July 2018, the establishment still stands empty... February 29, 2020 - The business was under contract, but that fell through. www.taneyweather.com
