A trip to the local grocery store!

Forsyth MO. - It was mid-March, 2020 and at about 10AM on a Wednesday, I made the decision to go to a local Country Mart Grocery store for some supplies...

The coronavirus was still raging all across the continental landscape. While, here in Missouri, there were only 16 cases out of a population of 6 million with no one yet dying! Although to hear the folks at CNN talk, this virus was going to be the end of the world as we know it. OK, then... I guess that's that. It must be true. Because, how often are those folks ever caught lying? Just saying.

I arrived at the store at about 9:20 AM and my first impression was that, while the store looked busy, it didn't look like there was much in the way of panic buying going on. If nothing else, it felt more like a typical weekend morning... Busy, but really not impressively so.

As I meandered my way through the isles, my first stop took me to the pharmaceutical section for a bottle of mouthwash and a few bars of soap. (Yes, just plain old soap). I noticed that where there was a generic selection available, that was what customers were buying. The Brand names were pretty much left sitting on the shelf. (That was something that showed up again and again as I shopped).

Next, it was onto the Produce Department where I grabbed some apples and an onion. I also noted that the large ten pound bags of potatoes was almost gone even as the smaller five pound bags were in ample supply. Everything else about that department seemed pretty normal.  I did overhear one of the store personnel remark that TP was hard to come by, and I wondered in passing, what the connection was between the virus and TP?  (Hint: There is none).

As I passed the canned goods isle, I glanced down the isles and noted that a lot of customers seemed to gravitate towards the purchase of corn! Why was that true, for God's sake? Perhaps, it was on sale. From a strictly nutritional standpoint, corn is not all that energy dense. (Nowhere like potatoes are). [As an aside; I would think that a collage post-grad might want to do some research on what people buy in stores like this during a time of a 'pseudo' crisis.] I call this crisis 'pseudo' based on the incidence of infection by the coronavirus being at about .00026% of the Missouri population. (If people wanted to be afraid of something, let them worry more about the regular flu which has hit the country pretty hard this season)!

When I finally made my way to the checkout area, I witnessed a group of ladies who looked pretty tired even at such an early hour, Hey! If you're planning on shopping at a grocery store, over the next couple of weeks, please consider slipping your checkout person a few bucks to help brighten their day....

As I stepped out of the store and headed for my car, the sun was breaking through the clouds and you could feel spring just about to burst out all over the place. I realized that things were going to be just fine and that all I really needed to do (besides washing my hands) was to keep the TV tuned to some old movie while bypassing the media talking heads and the politicians who were desperately trying to; score points, enhance the sense of panic and to throw taxpayer money at a problem that was going to very likely clear up like the early morning mist on a summer day.

KY3 abstract: The Beaver Creek bridge in Taney County is now the third major bridge to be shut down by Missouri Department of Transportation in the last three weeks.

In just about a two hour period Saturday, dozens of cars made it as far at the road leading up to the Beaver Creek bridge and had to turn right back around. Many of the drivers told KY3 their only option is a 45 minute detour.

Sherriff sting op targets struggling area bartenders!

Forsyth Mo. - In what could be a new 'twist' in law enforcement, local police have apparently concocted a 'sting' operation targeting area bartenders on serving underage kids.

On April 6, 2019, two out of three area bars, near where I live, were hit with potentially heavy fines due to a police operation that had a young 19 year old male enter those establishments during the peak lunch time hour where he then ordered a Coors beer. True, the youth did present a valid id, but this was done at a time where at least one establishment that I know of was getting slammed with lunch hour customers...

Good job, Taney Count Sheriffs police! You nailed a couple of individuals who are basically living check -to-check and tip-to-tip. The bar won't be charged, they will be!

While I fully understand the need to insure that every establishment which serves liquor needs to be monitored, what I do not understand is the fining of those who are doing their level best in what is a chaotic world. A warning citation would have been appropriate in every case! A harsh fine, not so much so....

Forsyth Events occurring on October 28!

Forsyth Halloween Parade!

Forsyth MO. – It's time for the annual Halloween Parade which is being hosted, once again, by the City of Forsyth. Registration is to occur in the parking lot of the Forsyth Presbyterian Church at 1PM on Saturday, October the 28th with the actual parade taking place from 2PM to 4PM. Pre-school through 4th grade children are invited to participate. After the parade, and also in the 2-4PM time frame, will be the annual Trick or Treat Community Party which will be happening in the aforementioned parking lot!

Fall Cleanup Day set!

Not to be outdone with the kids parade, The Taney County Commission has designated October 28, as the day to allow Taney County residents to dispose of certain items at the two transfer stations – for free! One of the stations is located at 274 Buchanan Road with the other on Hwy 160 just three miles to the north of Forsyth near the Taney Center. From 8AM to 3:30PM, residents can dump; furniture, appliances and automotive batteries. Also allowed will be most anything made of metal or lumber. Glass will also be accepted as long as it is segregated from other items being disposed of. If you have any questions, you can give the Taney County Road and Bridge Department a call at 417-546-7268. You will be required to present some form of proof of residency before you will be allowed to dump stuff off. Note also that the Buchanan Road Transfer Station only will allow the dropping off of tires for a $1 fee per tire. The limit, per resident, is 12 tires at that location! www.taneyweather.com

River Run Update – May 2012 – Riverside camping slots now available, but…

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the Park Attendants who are volunteering at River Run this season. Her name is Sue and I understand that her and her husband are from the Great State of Texas!

I stopped in the small office located by the entrance to the park to inquire about the condition of the campsites by the river. She confirmed my suspicions that the power was out in all those locations, but that the water was on! Also, these spots can be had for the bargain price of something like $9 per night. Since I have a small power generator to use, that sounded like a great deal.

But wait! There’s more! It also turned out that I’m eligible to apply for a USGS Senior Pass Card that the Corps of Engineers also honors even though they are not required to.  And, that card will afford me half price fare in the park. Now that is a good deal!

Air Evac in River Run rescue on April 30th

It was just another nice and quiet Monday evening when I heard the sirens off in the distance and then, a short time later, the blades of a rescue helicopter from Air Evac Lifeteam circled over my home before landing in the adjacent River Run Park. I hurried down there and filmed a few of the valiant men and women who devote themselves to helping others when accidents happen. I hope that this individual gets well and recovers soon! View it here on You Tube!
