Lunch at Forsyth's Subway!



At some point last summer, I stopped at a Subway located near my home in Forsyth Missouri and fell in love with their Cold Cut Combo 6” meal deal! (A great lunch time selection and hopefully a healthy addiction over time)!

And so it was on one of the coldest mornings of the 2016- 2017 winter, that I stopped at the 14974 US Hwy 160 venue (a location that was just to the north of small town of Forsyth Missouri), to grab a midday lunch! And, yes, I knew exactly what I wanted to chow down on!

Their Cold Cut Combo is just one of many sandwich offerings to be found at Subway, but it had tickled my fancy mostly because it was a healthy combo of veggies and meats on bread - simple and wholesome, just like myself. [OK. So, maybe I'm just simple].
I arrived at the popular eatery early on a Tuesday morning, at around about11:30 AM, in order to skirt the crowds that always seem to show up right at about the noon hour. I ambled into the always spotless eatery and found that there was only one person at the order counter. Perfect! But, now a word of caution! When you approach the counter of any Subway in the US, there is most always a great looking display of 'chips-in-bags', just begging to be snatched up. But, don't do it! These little bags of joy are actually 'caloric weight bombs'! And when they detonate, they can wreck even the most carefully devised diet! Thus, as I approached the counter that morning... I quickly grabbed myself a bag of Lays chips! [So, go ahead and sue me]!

Bag in hand, I then got the attention of the person I like to call the 'Facilitator'. (That's the guy or girl who assembles your sandwich according to your instructions). From a strictly procedural standpoint, you first call out the base and style of the sandwich. 'White bread, 6 inch cold cut combo,' I stated assertively that morning. The Facilitator eyed me casually and then asked, 'Ya'll want that toasted?' 'Yes, I do', I answered back. (My mouth had began to drool a bit, at that point. A troubling, but well understood development from past visits).

That chore accomplished, the last item in the order process was what most always got me flustered. My 'virginal white bun' had just come out of the flash oven and it smelled terrific! It was hot-to-trot and merely awaited my personal selection of veggies from what looked to be a cornucopia of mouth watering selection bins that contained every condiment imaginable. (On this day, however, excessive drooling forced me to forego normal speech in favor of a cannibalistic form of grunting and pointing. Thankfully, the Facilitator interpreted these strange gyrations correctly). [FYI - I prefer hot peppers, mayo, lettuce and onion on my cold cut combo]. In no time, the meal was expertly 'wrapped up' and I then paid up.

OK, just a word about Subway and the cost of their food. It's atrocious! Seriously, I sometimes feel like an addict scoring some drug for a hundred dollars. OK, may be not as bad as all that. Still, the 6 inch sub and the bag of chips cost $5.25 including tax! Personally, I think that a little costly! But hey, I'm a true culinary addict, like I said...

Fat Daddy's LiL' Piglet meals!



Forsyth MO – A recent visit to Fat Daddy's for a luncheon engagement dealt out a nice surprise for this overweight gnome. I went there with a friend named Mary to eat, but didn't really look forward to yet overly large meal that would better suit a younger and trimmer working man. Just too many calories! Actually, any meal over 700 calories would be pushing my self imposed limits. Losing weight, for us older people, can be a real challenge. No, I wanted something that was modest and after asking my server, I discovered it! Down towards the bottom of my menu was a section called LiL' Piglet Meals. In that section was an item called 'Piglet Pork'. A small hamburger sized portion contain ¼ pound of smoked pork, along with a side of fries for about $5. Wow! The taste was awesome, I didn't destroy my diet (~650 calories) and the whole meal deal was very affordable! Next time your over that way, please give this selection a try!

Hong Kong Express opening in Forsyth in November!


What is it with Forsyth Missouri and eateries? At my casual estimate, there were eight places to eat in a town of just over two thousand! Now we will have another 'oriental styled' venue come later in the fall.

As a venue, I admit to avoiding any type of restaurant that serves a buffet styled menu. I'm a bit leery of food that sits for hours and hours before someone comes along. Some food must be kept cool while others have to be maintained at certain levels of heat. Either way, things can (and do) go wrong. Thus, I do not plan to go to this location very often unless someone I'm taking to lunch insists!

As Forsyth has had a Oriental/Mexican restaurant for some time now, I could not help but wonder at the apparent duplication. I would have preferred to see something like a Wendy's or even a Shorty Small's as they offer a few pasta dishes that are excellent.

Well, time will tell, as they say. I hope to visit this venue after they open and will make a followup report.

Best burger and fries in Forsyth MO!


In my view, an old fashioned hamburger and fries is tough to beat almost any old time. And, the 'Kountry Burger' served up at the Long Horn Family Dining venue might just qualify as the best of the best offered up in my small town of Forsyth Missouri!

The Longhorn Family Dining restaurant is open seven days a week at this time, from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM, although I would call them at 417-546-9751 to confirm, just in case.

Update: Sadly, the Long Horn's renters decided to quit and so the business was once again shut down.

Economy Screen Printing in Forsyth MO!

A recently opened shop located at 163 Main Street in Forsyth MO. called Economy Screen Printing, does professional screen printing on T-Shirts and all sorts of other object like cups, hats mementos and more! The store is run by Martha Rudnick and Susan Lawrence both of  which can reproduce custom designs and logos; either from material a customer might bring in or from scratch. The cater to everyone; from individuals up to and including companies or organizations that might need to orders exceeding one thousand pieces. As you can see from the pictures of these T-shirts, almost anything can be created and at very reasonable prices!I was very impressed with just how detailed and beautiful the work that they do is close up!

In the near future, I was told that a customer will even be able to come in and create their own custom T-shirt and then print it on the spot! That would be very cool indeed!

Also, the shop can make available limited spaces for aspiring artists to set up shop and display their creations on a monthly rental basis. (And, while I decided not to post that amount here, I was very impressed with how low it was)! Note that this will not be a flea shop concept, but rather a place for a select group of artists to gain exposure. For the limited few people who can take advantage of this opportunity, ( I think I was told that there are only about 6 to 8 spaces available), they will need to act promptly as the spaces are already being reserved. as for advertising, I was told that the owners may even consider an open house type of event to help draw in additional traffic! In closing, I gained the impression that this business will likely do very well. The equipment I saw located there appeared to be top end. At the time of my visit, they were getting ready to fulfill an order consisting of a thousand t-shirts!

Please make it a point to stop in and to check them out. There were many very interesting items on display that I didn't cover here, but hope to in the future...

Forsyth Fun Day 2016!

Unlike the Fair this past June, this very popular event will be at the Shadowrock Park, one of my favorite locations. This event is sponsored by the City of Forsyth and is one of the real highlights of the summer! Two bands will supply awesome sounds, vendors will be doing their thing as a dedicated group of professional BBQ'ers go head to head to produce the most succulent culinary creations to be had on this planet! In the midst of all this will be the craziness that can only be found in cardboard boat races! Bring some chairs and blankets and make it a day to remember!

Mobile 1 Station in Forsyth MO under new ownership!


On the occasion of getting my oil changed in my vehicle, I was surprised to find that the Mobile 1 service facility located at 194 Coy Blvd., in Forsyth Missouri, was under new ownership when I drove over there to set an appointment! I had a chance to talk briefly with Dennis Renteria, the new owner, who seemed intelligent and nice. I made an appointment the next day at 8AM for an oil change and inspection. The next day, I arrived and was taken care of promptly and professionally. And, while I'm not clear on what happen with the previous ownership, this new guy seems to be OK. 

The facility was clean, equipped with bathrooms and the mechanic, Mike, who serviced my car told me that he had worked briefly under the old management, had quit and then come back to work for Dennis and was very happy with the way he ran things. Time will tell on well this service location is accepted by the community.

I included the business card for the information it has on it, but neglected to find out their business hours. I would guess you can call them to find that out. This facility is a full auto service and repair location for most any auto related problem you might have!

Area infrastructure ailing or failing?

Forsyth MO - Crews were out, once again to repair a water main that has repeatedly broken in recent years with crews from the local Water Department coming out to patch as best they can. This raised a question, in my mind, as to how well small communities are maintaining basic service infrastructure in what many call a poor economy?

Is Charlie's Steak Ribs & Ale an upscale restaurant?

Asking whether Charlie's Steak Ribs and Ale, located in Forsyth Missouri is upscale depends on what you mean by that term 'upscale'. To me, a truly upscale eatery, must meet a few basics in order to qualify:

Fast service

When eating at Charlie's, I've rarely had to wait for great service. On a recent visit there for breakfast, I had the pleasure of  being served by a young lady named Lisa. She came to my table in a blur of motion - got me a cup of coffee and took my order, all in Wonder Woman style! That's the kind of service I appreciate - consistent and professional!

As you can see, The Works Platter, I ordered, looks pretty darn good! The eggs were done to perfection as was the bacon and hash browns! The taste was excellent in point of fact, and after eating at this venue for many years, I've always appreciated the consistency of how well the food is prepared and presented!



Competitive pricing

The Works meal was being offered at just $5.49 (at the time of this post). In my book, that a great deal and I know (after frequently checking other local venues) that the owner is consistently at or under the cost of similar meals offered at other nearby venues! In this economy, that's a good thing!

So, that's the word! Consistent! A term that is applicable in describing; the service, the menu and the costs, are what make for an upscale restaurant in my book!  Please consider stopping there for your next breakfast lunch or dinner! Charlie's can be reached at (417) 546-2011.

Marketing keys for success!


 A few random thoughts about the value of advertizing in a competitive marketplace.

In order to survive in a highly competitive market, a small business needs to use most every trick in the trade in order to survive. No where is this more true than in the restaurant industry where eatery's can be stacked check to jowl even in small towns, such as I find myself in. Forsyth Missouri has a population of something like 1300. It's small by most small town standards and is basically laid out on one highway – Hwy160. From one end to the other, is not much above 4 miles and most of the ten eateries are all situated along about a one mile distance.

Of course, all these venues stay competitive price-wise within the framework of like establishments. The two fast food joints watch each other price points as does the two meat houses, two American, two Asian and two specialty houses. Each sub group offers up a unique eating experience to be sure, but the shear numbers (10 establishments) crammed so close together mean that garnering the money from a particular diners pocket will be challenging!

What sets each establishment apart and either make the more or less attractive, in my mind, is as follows:
  1. Good signage – are they easy to spot from the road!
  2. Cleanliness – are there any rumors of disease?
  3. Ambiance – how the venue makes you feel when you enter!
  4. Service – are they fast to get and create your order?
  5. Parking – can you find a spot during typical rush times?
  6. Menu – does the venue offer a wide choice of food?
  7. Prices – is the place affordable?
  8. Longevity – Has the venue been around for some time?
  9. Amenities – does the venue have something extra like a bar, specials, wifi or a drive thru?
  10. Advertising – What media channels does the venue employ to garner business?
This last item in the list is, to my mind, one of the most important and yet most often abused of anything else on the list! Some establishment do everything right with the exception that the advertising of their presence really sucks! The five channels that are realistically available to them (TV is not for most) would typically include:
  1. Word of mouth – Getting people to talk about an establishment is very effective!
  2. Radio – Expensive, but also effective over the long haul!
  3. Local newspaper – Helps to announce, maintain interest, promote specials, etc.
  4. Flyers – Time consuming and marginal in overall effectiveness.
  5. The Internet (web pages, Facebook, Blogs, etc.) - Can make or break a venue, in my view.
Very few of the local establishments make use of all five outlets or exploit them to full advantage. To my mind, the one that comes closest is Fat Daddy's, followed closely behind by Charlie's and perhaps the Mug. All three are visible on the Internet and use Facebook extensively. What about Sonic and McDonald's? I don't really like to count national chains as they are in a whole different ballpark when compared to the small business owner – even when they are individually owned they typically have access to a very well run advertising machine!

Today's eating crowd is a whole lot more techno-savy than they were even just a few years prior. Even grandpa and grandma jump on the net, without nary a thought, when they want to check out a new or exiting eatery. In today's very fast paced and hi tech world, a well maintained Facebook, web page or blog can sell what you got for literally pennies a day! In additional, establishments that actively promote the collection of Email addresses have a ready made method of communication without resort to expensive snail mail! After all, one email blast to a thousand customers costs exactly zilch!

A recycleing center or just another dump?

Just recently it was announced in the local Taney Times paper that the City of Forsyth was going to streamline the recycling operation by installing a single collection container instead of the numerous ones that used to dot the landscape. At the time, I thought this sounded like a good idea, but now I wonder.

Pictured is the lone container that contains portals with signs that indicate the type of recycled items that should go into that section. But there are a few problems that I could see. One was the lack of dividers inside the container to keep items separate. An other was the vague term 'plastic types' that is used to indicate what types of plastic bottles are allowed. If I remember correctly, there are at least six to eight classes of plastic, some of which can be recycled and some of which cannot. finally, there is no sign to indicate where paper items should go.

The end result can be plainly seen. People end up dumping a hodge-podge of materials into whatever portal they think is appropriate. My question. Is this stuff really even being recycled?

A steak and egg throw down!

While I would never be confused with Bobby Flay as a chef, I can still hold my own as a judge of good food. (Mainly because I eat so much of it)!

Two local establishments in Forsyth Missouri offer up a classic steak and egg menu item that contains; a 6 oz steak, two eggs, hash browns and your choice of bread. Both Fat Daddy's and Charlie's Ribs Steak and Ale are popular hangouts for both locals as well as visitors who come to the area. Both are well established and each is unique in its own way. I think Fat Daddy's specializes in smoked meat dishes while Charlie's has a fine bar that offers up home brewed ales. But, today I wanted to compare a single menu item that is ordered quite often at both locales, the ubiquitous Steak and Eggs platter.

Of the two locations, I feel that Fat Daddy's is the more down home of the two. Everything about this venue smacks of a small town eatery experience. Something that's getting harder for me to find every year. I've eaten there fairly often in the past and have never had a bad eating experience. Their food is consistently of a very high quality and the service is impeccable.

By contrast, I've always felt Charlie's is the more 'modern' of the two. In size, it appears much larger in terms of seating capacity although if you were to count Fat Daddy's lower level I think they'd turn out about the same. Charlie's also supports a full bar, so if you want to have something like a glass of wine with your meal, then it's the place to go.

So, all in all, I think both establishments are complimentary to each other. Now, what about the food? Well, in a head to head comparison, here's how I scored the dishes:

  1. The Eggs – I ordered up my eggs sunny side up at both establishments as you can see in the picture. Fat Daddy's was done to perfection, while Charlie's was a little bit brown on the bottom side. My point for the eggs goes to Fat Daddy's.
  2. The Toast – Both were done perfectly and were offered with jelly. No points to either side.
  3. The Hash Browns – This was a very close deal as both were awesome in terms of taste. However, for some reason I liked Fat Daddy's ab it more. A point to Fat Daddy's.
  4. The Steak – In both cases I ordered my steak to be cook rare and that's pretty much what I got. While both venues offer a 6 ounce steak, Charlie's comes off looking more like a true steak than does the flatter offering from Fat Daddy's. While both were tasty to eat, I give the one served at Charlie's the edge. Point awarded to Charlie's.

So, the score was Fat Daddy's = 2 Charlie's = 1. But, there's one more criteria I wish to bring up; the price and it's worth 2 bonus points!

Fat Daddy's offering cost $11.59 while Charlie's was only $7.99. That's a 31% cost difference in my book and so I'm awarding 2 points to Charlie's for a final score of 3 to 2. The bottom line; both establishments are worth your while to check out and frequent. Sure, Fat Daddy's may cost a little more for some items, but on the whole, I feel they offer a bit more depth of selection than does Charlie's. I'd urge my readers to make up their own minds by going out and visiting both!

Update: June 2014 - There's yet another sit down eatery now in Forsyth MO that offers  a steak and eggs platter and that would be the Longhorn Family Dining restaurant located at 16093 US Hwy 160 (or right across from Fat Daddy's). They serve a 5 oz sirloin, hash browns, 2 eggs, toast or biscuits and gravy for $7.89. I plan to do a write up on this meal soon and will post a link here! Note that as breakfast selections Charlie's and Fat Daddy's prices remained the same!

Update: February 2016 -  After some slight delay (ahem), I've decided to make my way over to the Long Horn to sample their Steak and Eggs offering. I've noted that the price advertised online for Fat Daddy's has remained the same while a similar 5 oz steak meal (aka Cattle Rustler) had increased to $8.39.

The trashing of a local park area! Where are the Police?

I'm not sure whose in charge of the Shadow Rock Park area, but whoever it is they should be ashamed! I'm guessing that would be the City of Forsyth and their seemingly callous neglect of an area just across from Swan Creek that is being progressively trashed by a group of what I consider to be inbred morons! Individuals who I'll bet aren't smart enough to realize that they look like complete idiots as they mindlessly run their vehicles through muddy area in a field adjacent to Shadow Rock Park. Duh!

The end result is a piece of utterly destroyed ground that will probably never recover as the soil has become so compacted that nothing will grow (reminds me of a scene out of some Third World country). And, for what reason? So that a few retards can pretend they're somebody cool? Give me a break! (I'll wager that the collective futures of these dimwits is not very good and that the words 'welfare' and 'prison' are or will soon be significant words to them).

Mid March River Run Park Update!



Back to back 80F and 74F degree days on March 15th and 16th motivated me enough to get outside and to check out the state of affairs in River Run Park located just to southeast of the town of Forsyth Missouri. During the late fall and over the winter, much was done by contractors to get the park back into tiptop shape. Included was the replacement of all of the RV power stations that had become rusted to floods from previous years. Also replaced for many of the sites were the water supply lines and outlets to help insure that every campsite has fresh water available to it.
 
And, even though the park doesn’t open until May the 1st, there were already a few RV’s and one tent camper there to enjoy the early and unseasonably warm weather. I walked around a bit and noticed that the tress that had been planted the previous fall looked good to go. It’ll be interesting watching them bud out once we get into the warmer months.

River Run in January 2013!



New water outlets at each site!

While it’s no secret that I’m far from being a big fan of the government, I will give credit where its due. The Army Corps of Engineers have done a stellar job in their efforts to rejuvenate the River Run Park area and get it ready for the 2013 season. This park which offers 32 long and level RV sites has been overhauled from pretty near one end to the other. Improvements include; new water and electrical outlets, a clean flush toilet house with hot showers, a boat ramp, dump station and play ground that are now in excellent condition. In addition, the Corps has planted new trees to replace the ones lost to past flooding. Senior Friendship Center Swap Meet

Seems like more and more of us are becoming seniors every year! One great gathering place down where I live is the Forsyth Senior Center. A great place to find 'homemade' food served each week day at 11:30 AM along with good people who like to get together and have fun.

This event helps keep the Center going and growing. Please come and give your support at the Swap Meet to be held on Saturday, October the 13th at Shadowrock Park just to the east of Forsyth, Missouri off Highway 160! Click on the picture above for additional information.

Forsyth Senior Friendship Center in Forsyth Missouri!



This meal tasted as good as it looked!
On a warm day in early August, I met with a couple of friends at the Forsyth Senior Friendship Center located at 13879 US Highway 160 and to sample that days offering of roast beef with carrots, mashed potatoes, dinner roll and a large cookie! The Center, which is owned and operated by the Seniors of Taney County, offers a complete lunch menu Monday through Friday (excepting Holidays) starting at 11:30ish AM. (I’d been told that you need to arrive early if you want to get a parking spot! That point was driven home to me when I arrived at 11:20 AM and found the parking lot nearly full)! The establishment had twelve large circular tables set up that day that could handle about 7 to 9 diners each by my estimate. On this day, I think that there were at least 60+ attendees.

The lunch menu, from day to day, is varied and a wonderful meal deal at a suggested donation of $3.50 for seniors over the age of 60 and just $6 for everyone else! Also (with the assistance of the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging), they offer services like free home delivery for those unable to attend. A great and worthy cause indeed!

The Friendship Center is a pretty interesting place for some other reasons also. They have numerous special events each weekday along with a flyer that highlights each day’s menu offerings. Update: If you pan to ever visit, do so on a day when they offer up the Breakfast Buffet! It's awesome and you can really load up your plate!

It’s mid summer at River Run Park!



It’s just after 10AM on a sunny July the 11th with a temperature standing at 80F (but which is destined to reach 90F before the day is done). And, while the sky overhead is clear, I can see haze along with some scattered cumulus clouds near the horizon.

I’m sitting at campsite #27, one of about a dozen still without power due to flooding that occurred the year before. After the waters finally receded, they had done a number on the power outlet boxes for the campsite that run along the rivers edge. Fortunately, ten other campsites that lie on higher ground were spared and today about half are occupied with RV’s. These sites cost $18 per day and offer both power and water, while the water only sites are going for $9.

It being midweek, the park was not very crowded. Those that were here, however, were taking advantage of the much lower temperatures than what was the regime just a week before. According the weather service, things should be relatively normal for the mid section of the month with daytime readings of about 90 followed by evenings in the low seventies.

It was gratifying to see one of the Corps of Engineer people out repairing the bath house and I hope to hear that all the campsites will be brought back up to code fairly soon. I was also pleased to see that the signs at the entrance of the Park had been refurbished!

Update: Shortly before closing for the winter - all the affect power outlets were removed and replaced! This was done in September and come next spring, the park should be clean and fully functional!

City of Forsyth Audit results



On June 19th at 5:30 PM, the City of Forsyth hosted a Public Forum whereby Deputy Missouri State Auditor Harry Otto presented the findings of the first ever audit of the City of Forsyth Missouri. The audit which was ordered as a result of a petition by over 200 citizens of the City was asked for in response to a concern that monies collected as part of a half cent ‘recreation tax’ may not have been entirely used in the manner they were supposed to be used, that is, for the maintenance of local area parks.

Proceeding began promptly in a room that was packed with concerned citizens, city officials and members of the media. Each person received a twenty page ‘State Auditor Report’ that contained both a Citizens Summary and a detailed report that covered eight specific areas that the audit found to be in need of correction. Addressed at the forum were the following areas:

1)      Financial Condition
2)      Real Estate Purchases
3)      Restricted Revenues
4)      Utility Controls and Procedures
5)      Accounting Controls and Procedures
6)      Expenditures
7)      Payroll Controls and Procedures
8)      Budgets and Ordinances

Overall, the Audit found the City’s performance to be only ‘fair’ and in each section there were recommendations made by the auditing body along with a written response from the Board of Aldermen. Mr. Otto made it clear to all present that there would be no follow-up to this audit and advised everyone present that it is the citizens responsibility to ‘hold the Boards feet to the fire’ through attendance and involvement at the frequent board meetings that are held at City Hall and which are open to the public.

My take on this whole schmear was that, while there was no criminal activity in the way the Board administered city funds, some procedures have been executed poorly and need to be tightened up (perhaps the April elections could help here). I also had the impression that this audit, which was spearheaded by citizens like former Alderwoman Missi Hesketh, was fully justified as it exposed glaring inefficiencies in the manner in which monies were being used and accounted for.

Hopefully, everyone will walk away from this effort with a desire to improve the City operationally and with the certain knowledge that the audit process itself, which was initiated by concerned citizens, is proof that the built-in political checks and balances are fully operational.
